Welcome to the J.K. Kenpo comprehensive self-defense, fitness program. The emphasis of this program is on developing coordination, increasing strength and flexibility and introducing you to a fantastic self-defense system known as the art and science of Kenpo Karate.
What is Kenpo Karate?
Kenpo Karate is a modern self-defense art. It is also a method of physical and mental conditioning. We teach physical skills which you will retain for a lifetime, as well as mental skills to dealing with everyday problems in anew way. Every course of study we offer-from simple self-defense classes to intensive Black Belt work shares these qualities.
"Karate" is a Japanese term for a form of self-defense developed in China and India. It's origin and early history are lost in antiquity, but the art is at least two thousand years old. Kenpo Karate is one of several Karate styles currently popular in the Western world. It features unusually fast hand and foot combinations intended for practical self-defense. It is realistic and employs sound logic and theoretical innovations not yet used by other systems. Kenpo Karate exercises are varied, easy to perform and provide excellent physical conditioning.
Although Kenpo is one of many schools of self-defense, there is no "pure" form of Karate and there never was one. Different Karate styles were developed by students who borrowed from their teachers and contributed their own ideas. Even though Kenpo Karate is quite modern, many of its ideas come from the classical Chinese. This is not because we wish to imitate the Chinese, but because the ideas are good.
What does Kenpo Karate offer?
The foundation of Karate is its self-defense value. This builds confidence by giving students the ability to stand up to certain intimidating situations.
Learning and practicing Karate is a relaxing, enjoyable fitness exercise. The training begins simply with learning to loosen up by stretching properly. It progresses to the level you feel comfortable with. Karate practice is great conditioning. You don't need special or expensive equipment; you can practice Karate at your convenience, in your home or at the Studio.
Kenpo Karate movements develop coordination, and increase strength and flexibility.
As with most arts, there is wealth of knowledge that can be mastered, but it is easy to start learning and the benefits are immediate.
We strive to make the learning experience pleasant and fun. People enjoy coming to the studio, whether to work with the instructors or to combine exercise with socializing.
What is special about this Studio?
Our programs emphasize the individual. People are different. They don't all want the same things. We begin by listening, to discover what the student wants to learn. Then we structure a training program, adapting traditional oriental training methods, to accomplish the student's wishes.
Why is Kenpo Karate better than other styles?
We teach realistic methods of self-defense. Kenpo Karate uses all our weapons (the hands, fingers, elbows, knees, feet) in ways that anyone, not just exceptional athletes, can perform. It emphasizes speed, power, agility and accuracy, but requires no special strength or abilities.
What is the right age to start Karate?
Age doesn't matter. Neither does the student's present physical condition. We teach students from 4 to 65. Training moves at the student's own pace, whether fast or slow.
Is Karate training recommended for women?
Definitely. We train women to Black Belt level and they have become instructors. Women typically have greater flexibility than men. Flexibility is a major asset in Karate and women frequently learn kicking movements faster than men.
Are private lessons and other types of instruction available?
Private instructions are available, although all our programs focus on the individual.
Do you teach adults and children together?
We never do this. Adults and children train in separate classes. Teaching them together robs both of proper instruction. It also ignores their different skills and abilities. No reputable education system presents information to adults on a child's level or vise versa.
